Websites to Use:
This section of my portfolio has websites that are useful to create and explore reading and writing lessons for my class. These are sites that I can access and are going to promote an engaging reading classroom. Having resources like these will allow me to stay informed with new lesson ideas, books, and studies that will promote literacy in my classroom!
http://www.asd4.org/schools/fullerton/docs/Principal%20Message.pdf
This website has a resource that would provide a parent or teacher on what to do to help their student or students. It is written in a user friendly way so that anyone can figure out how to help their child with reading. I felt that I should put this on my page to show future parents how to support their child's reading development.
http://www.fcrr.org/curriculum/studentCenterActivities23.shtm
This website has many ideas for fluency, comprehension, writing, and word study for students in the classroom. There are many grade levels within this site. These are good ideas of how to create a lesson on one of those topics.
http://www.gigglepoetry.com/
This is a fun website which allows upper elementary students to explore poetry with goofy poems. The website calls them Giggle Poems. Students can read poems or fill in the blanks to write their own. They also can use this to brainstorm and write poems of all their own. This gives me a great ideas to use in the classroom one day.
http://www.aaronshep.com/rt/
This website shows the basics to readers theater. It gives ideas of how to have students participate with reader theater in the classroom. There are also sample readers theaters included to use in a class. This site explains how to effectively use readers theater.
http://www.professorgarfield.org/pgf_home.html
This is an interactive website where students can read and write cartoons. The website visitor can select the different activities that they want to do. This is also fun for students because there are cartoon characters on the website. One activity I was playing used different phonetic sounds. These would be good to use for struggling students.
http://piclits.com/compose_dragdrop.aspx
For this website students start off by choosing a picture that the students are able to describe. The pictures are of many different things. Students can select their picture by their interest. This makes the activity more meaningful for them.
http://www.makebeliefscomix.com/
This website is creative and allows students to make their own comic strip. The student can select a language to write in and then get started. This could be good for ELLs who have a difficult time with English. They get to select their characters and the art that goes in the strip. This is fun, but the students will also be practicing their riding. This would be good for early finishers in the classroom setting.
http://www.kellyskindergarten.com/Games/GamestoMake/games_to_make.htm
Here, there are many games and activities that would be appropriate to modify for all grade levels. I incorporated this website because I would be good to use in the classroom so that small groups of students can play developmentally appropriate games.

This blog is created by a professor at James Madison University and it contains many new books that would be great to have in an elementary classroom. The blog writer has been able to evaluate children and young adult books for many years. She also published a Best of the Year book list since the 1990s. She also has been on a number of ALA committees and serves on a IRA's Teachers' Choices program. With her knowledge she would make great suggestions to use on classroom books.
http://www.ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/caldecottmedal/caldecottmedal
This is the website that contains books which have won the Caldecott Medal. These are childrens' picture books which are awarded based off the illustrations. This site is a great reference if I work with younger elementary students. It also will keep me updated with current books.
http://www.ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/newberymedal/newberymedal
Similarly, this part of the same website shows all the current Newbery medal winners. This book are awarded to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. These books are great for upper elementary students or read alouds. As a teacher, I will need to stay updated with new stories that the students will be interested in.
